Hidden Cypress Is Sun City's Busiest Address Until January 4

From now until the year ends, Hidden Cypress has more going on than any other amenity center in Sun City Hilton Head. Its outdoor pool has just reopened after improvements and is one of only two heated outdoor pools this winter. Jameson's Charhouse is in its final weeks there. The golf course renovation that closes it all down starts Monday, January 4, 2027, according to the Community Association's Membership Announcements page, last updated October 26.

That makes November and December a short season with a firm end date. Once it's over, the community's evening routine moves to three other venues whose open days only partly overlap.

The Pool Math Behind a Busy November

The Association says all pools stay heated until daylight saving time ends, except the Riverbend outdoor pool, which is out for the rest of 2026. For the winter, the Lakehouse and Hidden Cypress outdoor pools are heated from November 1 through March 30. The Barataria, Breakwater and Riverbend outdoor pools are not heated.

The Lakehouse indoor and outdoor pools are closed for improvements from October 26 through November 15. That leaves Hidden Cypress as the only heated outdoor pool open in Sun City for the first half of November. The Riverbend outdoor pool is out of service for the rest of 2026 while maintenance is scheduled.

If you swim indoors, the Association lists three pools heated year-round: Breakwater Fitness Collective, the Lakehouse and Purrysburg. Until November 15, with the Lakehouse closed, that comes down to Breakwater and Purrysburg. Children's pool hours are also at Purrysburg indoor pool from 3 to 5 p.m. daily, a change that began October 12.

Croquet players lose their lawns for the same weeks. The croquet lawns closed Monday, October 26, for overseeding and stay closed until Monday, November 30.

December 31 Is the Last Night at Jameson's Charhouse

On October 13, the Association announced that Jameson's Charhouse at Hidden Cypress will close on Thursday, December 31. The current restaurant provider asked to take the Hidden Cypress location out of its agreement, pointing to the coming course closure "and other considerations." The Association stated plainly that the provider made the request. The same provider will keep running The Clubhouse at Okatie Creek and AL's Pub at Argent Lakes.

The notice also says the Association contacted other restaurant providers about running Hidden Cypress, and they chose not to take it on. The Board decided to use the renovation period to rethink the space rather than look for another operator right away. The restaurant will be renovated while the course is closed, with help from RealFood, a national hospitality consulting company.

Here is how the Association describes its goal:

"We want it to be a welcoming, comfortable gathering place where residents can meet friends, catch up with neighbors, enjoy a drink or a meal, and where golfers can relax before or after a round."

The notice gives no reopening date, no renovation budget and no new operator. For now, the dates that matter are the closing on December 31 and the course renovation starting January 4. Anyone who has a usual table at the Charhouse has until New Year's Eve to use it.

Three Kitchens, Three Different Weeks

After December 31, the Association's Food & Drink roster drops to three on-site venues. It names no other restaurant at Breakwater, the Lakehouse or Riverbend. Each of the three keeps a different weekly schedule, so putting their posted hours side by side shows which days are well covered and which are not.

Day The Clubhouse at Okatie Creek AL's Pub & Pizzeria at Argent Lakes Brackish Bar & Lounge at Spanish Moss Hall
Monday 11 a.m.–8 p.m. Closed Closed
Tuesday 11 a.m.–8 p.m. Noon–8 p.m. Closed
Wednesday 11 a.m.–8 p.m. Noon–8 p.m. Closed
Thursday 11 a.m.–8 p.m. Noon–8 p.m. Noon–8 p.m.
Friday 11 a.m.–8 p.m. Noon–8 p.m. Noon–8 p.m.
Saturday 11 a.m.–8 p.m. Noon–8 p.m. Noon–8 p.m.
Sunday Brunch advertised, hours not posted Closed Noon–8 p.m.

On Mondays, only The Clubhouse at Okatie Creek posts hours. Its operator describes casual comfort food with lunch, dinner, Sunday brunch, golf course views, a bar and patios. The menu covers pub appetizers, salads, burgers, sandwiches, seafood and entrées. Sunday brunch is advertised but no Sunday hours are listed, so call before planning a Sunday around it.

From Tuesday through Saturday, all three venues are covered. AL's Pub & Pizzeria belongs to the same Jameson's Charhouse group and describes itself as an outdoor, social pub with pizza, shared appetizers, local craft beer and specialty cocktails. It keeps the bar and kitchen open on the same hours and doesn't take reservations.

On Sundays, the newest venue is the only one with posted hours. Brackish Bar & Lounge is at Spanish Moss Hall in Sun City West and is open Thursday through Sunday. The Association says you can have drinks and bites inside or by the pool. According to the August 2026 Brackish menu, you order at the bar from a list of shareables, handhelds, salads, sides and desserts, plus cocktails, wine, beer and mocktails.

Bluffton Today reported that Spanish Moss Hall and the Breakwater Fitness Collective opened together with a March 18 ribbon cutting. The outlet described them as a $50 million addition of nearly 60,000 square feet, with a ballroom, game room and lazy river alongside Brackish. Breakwater has indoor pickleball, tennis, basketball and volleyball courts. Those buildings opened in March. In January, with Hidden Cypress quiet, Spanish Moss Hall becomes the only Sunday dining spot on the posted schedules.

The November Calendar Already Leans West

Several ticketed nights in November and early December are at Riverbend and Spanish Moss Hall rather than Hidden Cypress. These are the listings on the Community Association's ticket portal from November 10 through December 7:

  1. Tuesday, November 10: Lowcountry Boil at Riverbend, catered by Toomer's, with live music by Jonathan David King. $45, dinner included.
  2. Thursday, November 12: Bourbon & Blues with Marlene Smalls and Blues Trio at Spanish Moss Hall. $18.
  3. Monday, November 16, and Tuesday, November 17: Purple Madness, Bobby Miller's Prince tribute, at Magnolia Hall. $37 per ticket.
  4. Monday, December 7: Paint & Pinot: Holiday Lighthouse at Pinckney Hall for $40, and a second Riverbend Lowcountry Boil, this one by Bluffton Oyster Company, for $45 with dinner.

Ticket availability changes, so check the portal before you plan an evening around any of these. The November issue of SunSations went online October 26 and asks readers to save the date for the Veterans Day event. It also covers how to request vehicle gate passes for holiday guests.

Where the Hidden Cypress Conversation Happens

The future of Hidden Cypress is being decided now, and the Association has opened three ways for residents to take part.

The first is the Golf Town Hall on Thursday, November 5, from 3 to 5 p.m. at Magnolia Hall. The Board, Association management and golf staff will talk about course conditions, operations, long-term planning and sustainability, and give an overview of the Hidden Cypress renovation. The Association says future golf planning will follow four principles: business, logic, fairness and balance. John McLaughlin will also be there. He became Director of Golf Operations on October 12.

The second is an email address just for restaurant ideas: [email protected]. The third is a resident survey, which the Association says is coming soon.

All three matter because of what the October 13 notice said: other providers turned the space down, and the Association is redesigning it as a gathering place rather than handing it to a new tenant. The Association says it wants the new Hidden Cypress designed around what residents want, and the email address and survey are how it is collecting those ideas.

Some work outside Hidden Cypress is also affecting how people get around. Road resurfacing started in Murray Hill on October 26 and moves next to Historic Village, weather permitting. Overnight parking on secondary streets, including Col. Thomas Heyward, is allowed during paving if needed. Santee Cooper is bringing equipment for the Basil Court powerline project through the Bull Hill Gate, and that work is expected to take four weeks.

A change at an amenity center can matter to a household planning its next few years in Sun City, whether that means staying, downsizing within the community or selling.
