A Hilton Head Island Thanksgiving Tradition: Annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner

On Hilton Head Island, Thanksgiving is about more than gathering around the dinner table. It's also a time when the community comes together to share a meal, celebrate the season and extend a warm welcome to neighbors and visitors alike.

For nearly three decades, Hudson's Seafood House on the Docks has been at the heart of one of the Island's most cherished holiday traditions. The Annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner brings together people from all walks of life for an afternoon of delicious food, friendly conversation and generosity, all against the beautiful backdrop of Skull Creek.

The restaurant's waterfront setting provides a memorable backdrop for a menu filled with holiday favorites. Guests can look forward to roasted turkey, glazed ham, mashed potatoes, cornbread stuffing, sweet potato soufflé and homemade desserts.

Rather than individual restaurant reservations, the dinner features family-style seating that encourages guests to connect with others and enjoy the holiday together. From families celebrating with loved ones to individuals spending Thanksgiving away from home, everyone is invited to take part.

The meal is completely free, with no reservations required. It's a wonderful opportunity to enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving dinner while experiencing the hospitality that makes Hilton Head Island so welcoming.

A Celebration Built on Community Generosity

The Community Thanksgiving Dinner traces its beginnings to a local newspaper story that highlighted Hilton Head Island residents who had nowhere to spend the holiday. Inspired to make a difference, several community leaders began exploring ways to bring people together for a shared Thanksgiving celebration.

In early 1999, Brian Carmines, then-owner of Hudson's Seafood House on the Docks, Allan LaCoe and Betsy Doughtie, former executive director of The Deep Well Project, met to discuss organizing a community-wide event. St. Andrew By-The-Sea United Methodist Church soon joined the effort, taking the lead in coordinating volunteers, while Hudson's offered to host the inaugural dinner. That Thanksgiving Day, approximately 500 meals were served, launching a tradition that continues more than 25 years later.

Volunteers assist with everything from preparing and serving food to welcoming guests and helping the day run smoothly. For many, participating has become an annual family tradition and a meaningful way to give back during the holiday season.

The event also supports charitable organizations that serve residents throughout the Lowcountry. Although there is no cost to attend, donations are encouraged, with 100% of the funds raised benefiting three local nonprofits:

  • The Deep Well Project, which provides emergency assistance and essential resources to individuals and families experiencing hardship.
  • Bluffton Self Help, which helps Lowcountry residents build stability through education, financial assistance and supportive services.
  • Second Helpings, which rescues surplus food and distributes it to local organizations addressing food insecurity.

These partnerships help extend the spirit of Thanksgiving well beyond the dinner itself, supporting neighbors throughout the year. For more information about attending, volunteering or supporting the event, visit CommunityThanksgiving.com.
