History and preservation come to life in Sea Pines

The community of Sea Pines, Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, is a nature lover’s paradise due to preservation efforts begun decades ago. It started with Charles Fraser, who founded the Sea Pines Company in 1956. Fraser’s goal was to develop the land for habitation without upsetting the delicate balance between nature and mankind.

Working under the restrictions of land-use covenants, landscape architect Hideo Sasaki created a master plan for the Sea Pines community that revolved around homes blending into the natural landscape. Oceanside cul-de-sacs with easements of 20 to 30 feet allowed room for ocean access, bucking the first-row/second-row building trend.

Sasaki’s plan included the 605-acre Sea Pines Forest Preserve, accounting for about a fourth of the land area. The Harbour Town Yacht Basin was designed around a beautiful live oak, called the Liberty Oak, where Fraser was ultimately buried.

Choose from the Pete Dye-designed Heron Point course, Atlantic Dunes by Davis Love III, and the Harbour Town Golf Links, which hosts the RBC Heritage PGA Tour event. 

You can also check out the Sea Pines Country Club, which offers a members-only private course designed by Arnold Palmer and Frank Duane.

There are three on-site facilities for racquet sports as well. The South Beach Racquet Club has 13 Har-Tru clay tennis courts and over a dozen pickleball courts, plus a members’ lounge and viewing deck lined with rocking chairs.

The Sea Pines Country Club has eight lighted Har-Tru tennis courts and several dedicated pickleball courts. Finally, the Sea Pines Racquet Club, located at the Sea Pines Resort, has 21 clay and four hard tennis courts, as well as six clay pickleball courts.

Equestrians will appreciate access to Lawton Stables, a private full-service facility offering boarding, championship arenas, and access to the Sea Pines Forest Preserve. 

Owing true to its roots, nature remains a primary focus of the community. The Sea Pines Legacy Oaks Program preserves and celebrates centuries-old live oaks, while the 4,800-year-old Sea Pines Shell Ring (listed in the National Register of Historic Places) is one of just 20 such Native American rings still in existence. A wildflower field in the forest preserve features 1.5 acres of breathtaking blooms.

Sea Pines, Hilton Head, SC, boasts on-site dining and shopping. The Surfside Market at the Sea Pines Resort offers grab-and-go breakfast, lunch, and snack items, along with beer and wine, while the Lowcountry Produce Market & Cafe at the Sea Pines Center serves classic breakfast and lunch menus.

The Salty Dog Cafe in South Beach Marina Village offers waterfront dining with casual vibes, including a seafood-focused menu and an outdoor bar. Head to Giuseppi’s Pizza for Italian favorites and a sports-themed atmosphere. For a fun day of shopping, try The Shops at Sea Pines Center and boutiques in Harbour Town.
